About Reece Pottery

After a move from New Jersey in 1987, my wife, Lynda, and I opened Reece Pottery in our Pennsylvania hill barn located in Newfoundland, PA. Atop a Pocono Mountain, we are just a 2-1/2 hour ride from NYC or Philadelphia, and enjoy the business and the company of people from all over the world.

The Pocono Mountains are the home of many beautiful resorts, lodges, B&B's, and Lake Wallenpaupack. We are just a few miles south of the Lake. Just follow the directions and bring our phone number.

Starting with a stoneware clay that is prepared to my private formula, I use wheel-thrown, slab, and hand-built techniques to create my pottery and sculpture. The initial pieces must be completely dry before being bisque (a preliminary firing) fired. Once bisque fired, the pieces can be parafined a wax-resisted, so that the glaze does not adhere to these spots.

I use several glazes that I prepare myself and a multitude of glazing techniques to achieve my desired results. Once glazed, the pieces can be glaze fired. My homemade firebrick kiln is a good sized sprung-arch, down-draft reduction kiln. Reduction firing is a type of firing where the flame is right in the kiln chamber. This allows for the reduction of oxygen to the ware, creating a waxy matt finish to the glazes with plenty of spotting.

My glaze firings take 12 to 15 hours and go to cone 10 (2300°F). This high-firing then requires 2 days of cooling and, with the help of the kiln God, the pieces have happily completed their journey.
